Ring installation

Forums

Not sure if this will be of use to anyone...

I was attempting to install new pistons in my 71 750 roadster and foolishly didn't bother with the proper tools. I've done this before but it's hardly ideal and of course, I broke a ring. The guy I buy my parts from ordered me a new set of rings and is very nicely loaning me a pair of ring compressors for the job. To further increase my odds of success I also made this wooden deck that sits on top of the case studs so that I'm not holding the barrels with one hand and pushing pistons in with the other. Once the pistons are in their bores the front part of the deck is unfastened and slides out to the side. The back is drawn out from the rear. I safety-wired the screws so that I won't drop them into the case.

... was what they used to be called. I have a small selection I've made for singles. For the Commando I just used 2 bits of 1/2" square wood.

But yours is very nicely made.
