1949 ES2

Forums

Hi All

I have justpurchased a 1949 ES2 and rather than trying to ask the previous owner, but one ,my question I thought I would see ifanyone here has the answer. Although a 1949 model it has positive earth electrics, whether by accident or intention I don't know. My question is : Would the original wiring diagram, which is for negative earth still hold good?.

YES. Lights, switching, horn. All wiring is thus, to make it Work. What you need to remember is, if the polarity of a dynamo/magneto machine is reversed, with an original electromechanical/bobbin regulator then reverse the battery and re-polarise the dynamo and all will work! The wiring colour to the battery might be wrong! but after all that is mere asthetics! Until you get it wrong and you get smoke! But of course if you buy an electronic regulator (good stuff, I sell thousands!) then you do pin your self down with regard to polarity.

So there.

Many Thanks Al.

My concern was with the magneto. With a positive earth ,changed in error at some time in the past, would the magneto somehow be in reverse.ie. the spark from the plug body to the central electrode and back to the magneto through the hightension lead?

OK Thanks Boo!.

I must admit I Don't understand how two systems can use the frame as an earth, onenegative and one positive and operate at the same time. I'm used to coil ignition and was expecting to get 40,000 volts through the saddle! Umm.

Best Regards
