18d2 rotor arm security?

The rotor arm is a loose fit on the shaft ,I believe there should be some sort of retaining spring close to the cam ,does anyone know what should be there? anyone have a spare dissy to look at? Thanks

The rotor arm is push fit. It has a protruding piece in the 'barrel' which engages in a slot in the distributor shaft. There do seem to be a lot of poor quality aftermarket spares out there. Maybe you have one. I have an article showing how to recondition one, but it is too big to attach to this message. If you post an email address, i will send a copy to you.

The rotor arm on an 18d2 is not retained the same as a car one. It is not designed to be a snug fit. It is supposed to be loose untill in its correct position where its retained by a device which i have never seen but has been described as a TANG . This may have been formed from part of the shaft or be a seperate metal spring lodged in or on the shaft. If you have not seen this or got one then you know only as much as me. Does anyone know more than this?.Seems like I will have to carry on wedging the arm on with a bit of paper.

Thanks Charles, I have seen this and the "tang" is clearly missing and the rotor arm has not been retained and has damaged the cap. One would hope the brush and spring would do the job ,and sometimes they do, for a while!.If a new pattern (they mostly are) rotor arm is a tight fit,its because the makers are not copying the Lucas design.Perhaps thats the best solution.

I notice that Classic Motorcycle Spares in Swindon, Tel. 01793 295014 list Caps, Rotorarms and Points for the 18D2 . Might be worth a phone call.
