Hello All - Does anyone know what sort of signal I should be getting from a Type 5PU reluctor/pickup unit ? The unit is paired up with the AB11 Amplifier with yellow paint panel and two 6V PVL (German) coils in series. The coils seem to be using 1.7 A when the donk is stationary. Probably about right ? When using the kick-starter I am reading only a few mV ac . Also does anyone know if a Boyer reluctor/pickup can be used with a RITA ? Regards, Howard

Can't answer in detail but:a) I'm pretty sure it is not compatible with Boyer. The Lucas RITA provides advance based on speed of approach of the rotor tips so it is essentially mechanical and not dependent on battery voltage. Unlike Boyer which is renowned for running to full advance when voltage is low (and thus kicking back violently which never happens with RITA).b) simple test of amplifier is to take out a plug, put the lead in place, earth its body, and switch RITA on and then switch it off. It should give a fat spark at the instant it goes off irrespective of the location of rotor.c) If there is unburnt fuel in the cylinders it will often make a "puff" noise if switched on and off as the wasted spark fires.

Checking the mV from the RITA pickup is of little use. If there is a circuit (several hundred ohms) then waveing a magnet at it will trigger the RITA. If you are having trouble getting a spark, try as directed here, ie switch off and watch the plugs. Switch on again turn the reluctor (rotor) to close to the pickup, wave a small screw driver in the gap-does it spark?

The Boyer pickup will trigger the RITA and vice versa BUT the advance curves are liable to be complete rubbish-DON'T do it. Unless you have the engine on a dyno and you know what you are doing.
