Navigator coil replacement

Forums

I'm in the process of replacing the coils on my Navigator and have just received the new Lucas coils from the club shop (thanks for the prompt and efficient service as always!). My old coils only have SW marked next to the terminal which the wire from the ignition switch (dark green) comes from, the other terminals go to the points via a grey and a maroon wire. The new coils have the two terminals marked + and - which doesn't make it crystal clear which terminal attaches to which wire. My befuddled Monday mind suggests that it being a positive earth system the wires to the points (grey and maroon) go to the + terminals and the wires to the ignition switch (dark green) go to the - terminals. Can one of our electrical gurus confirm or correct my logic? Many thanks.

You are correct.

Correct on coil polarity. The full rules is this-the coil polarity follows the battery polarity while the CB on Wipac is for Contact Breaker (only of use with Positive earth!) If you get it wrong no damage is done but the spark become less efficient.

Too late for you to change direction now BUT my advice would have been stick with the Wipac coils as they seem to last for ever and having the HT take off out the side then they fit under the tank better.

Then of course there is the point (or in fact 'no point' if you see what I mean 'arry) in that if you are changing coils then you perhaps should be considering electronic ignition and 12V as then you would use the two Wipac 6V coils on the electronic ignition etc. Full details on my web site, but then you have all read that.....

Thanks Alan, sadly my Wipac coils were showing their age and breaking down when hot but agree about the HT pick off being ideal for a Navigator. I searched around but couldn't find a source of new ones hence the Lucas replacements which have cured the misfire. I will consider converting to 12v and electronic ignition when it comes to full rebuild time.

You won't find any NEW Wipac ones as WIPAC faded away many years ago. When I converted the Electra to Electronic ignition I had to go for 2X 6V coils and I purchased WIPAC seconds through a club member, many miles on fine result.
