I am assembling a Lucas E3L dynamo from parts. I have a Lucas manual on them, but it doesn't show how to wire them up at the brush end. Not wanting to take the dynamo off my Dominator to find out, can anyone tell me where the different wires go?
I think the D (right) terminal takes the right brush, the F(left) terminal takes a field coil lead, and the other field coil lead and the left brush go to the earth screw above the brush-end bearing
But tell me if I have guessed wrong....

By 'non-insulated' brush…
By 'non-insulated' brush lead, do you mean one with a flexible plastic coil around the wire, which can move about? So that is for the earth brush, ie to the earth screw pointing towards the two external terminals F and D. So the D terminal goes to the other brush, and the F terminal to the remaining field coil lead.
Am I right?

That diagram confirms that I was on the right track.
The dynamo now motors, in the right direction....
Does the D terminal take the brush lead with the loose spiral 'insulation' ?

All the dynamos I have had the pleasure of playing with have had that spiral "insulation" on both commutator brush wires. The matchlessclueless.com website under the electrical guides tab has great information on dynamo testing etc if you are interested.

Yes, me too. One brush holder should be insulated from the mounting plate (usually the right one looking at the end), the other not. Obviously the D terminal is attached to the insulated one.....

One thing to check is that the field coil with the sleeve on it goes to the earth screw together with, as you say, the non-insulated brush lead which is normally to the left (at least on singles where the field coil is at the top of the casing).
