Fibreglass tank refurbishment

My Fastback tank & tail units have gone very patchy & faded, despite them being brand new 20 years ago (Fair Spares replacement items). I was going to get them resprayed this winter, but couldn't find anyone locally that would answer an email to see if this was a service they could offer. However, perhaps they don't need respraying at all...

Today I was removing old & cracked side panel & tail transfers & I noticed that the red coloured area beneath the transfers was as bright as it ever was. I'd assumed that the gelcoat was faulty & the patchyness was more than surface deep. I then spent a while with some 600 grade wet & dry followed by 1500 grade & some colour restore wax polish & managed to get a reasonably shiny & bright red finish.

My questions are: Has anyone gone to the trouble of similar fairly intensive fibreglass restoration before? Did the end result look acceptable? Other than lots of elbow grease, are there any tips they could give me?

Many thanks

Paul Mugleston (Notts Branch)
