961 paint schemes

Since aquiring my 961 SE in August 2013 (in original Black and Gold) I have been keeping an eye out for the different paint schemes on the bikes. Norton seen happy to apply any paint scheme you want if you pay.

Attached is a scheme I spotted at Donnington last year which was originally a one of but I have subsequently seen others painted in this scheme.Any other interesting paint schemes out there?

Mine is in BRG which I didn't pay anything extra for. Interestingly this colour isn't listed in Norton's 961 brochure or on their website so I guess it's a case of having a chat with them and seeing what 'Standard' colours they can do.

I do like the Union Jack on the tail unit of the bike in the photo. I'd also love to see a 961 with a tailpiece like that seen on the SG2 race bikes.

If it's the same one it belongs to a NOC member, it was featured on the Norton website on 8 Feb 2013. Another paint scheme -done by Norton France -was alsofeatured on the Norton siteon 23 April 2013.

Hello all one of best colours I have seen was for a chap who had one done in a burnt orange colour, I believe it was a colour that Norton had for export commandos years ago. when I asked it was for a bloke who run the brick yard race circuit in America. that was 3 years ago, it looked awesome.Happy miles Paul.

Pink with a red seat sounds awesome! Almost as good as metallic blue with a red seat. I'm sure nobody would copy it!

WELL I don't think anyone will argue with that!

To get back to David's original post and picture, I have also seen that bike or one like it and in my opinion it's the best I've seen. I was thinking of having a red/silver scheme like the early 750 model but not seen any like that yet.

Hi David, the bike you photographed belongs to Mal Childs of Essex branch. He chosehis owncolour scheme. I believe it was the first one to have a pillion seat too. Isnât it lovely.

Another scheme is a revision of the classic Norton Black but with white lettering and linning rather than gold. This bike is called the Black Panther as it also has black crankcase

David

Hello David I rode the panther as I couldn't make my mind up as to which pipes I wanted on mine, found the shorty pipes to noisy so settled for the noisy reverse cones, funny as my ducati is far louder that the Norton but must be that bit longer as a little higher so easier on the ears of the rider.

Happy Miles to all

JMc

Now the polychromatic blue with red seat is Norton's colours Not my colours , there were 3 metallic blue colours that Norton did a light polychromatic for export model 88 1952/54 and Metalscent Blue export colour for 1958/9 model 88/99 and 1961/2 650de-lux . polychromatic blue for the Export Norton Manxman 1960/61.some home models 650SS from September .1961 to late October of the same year, but 961 caferacer my look ok to some but I like the two shock rear units better than the mono shock even Brian Crichton did some computer data on this and found that twin shocks were better than a mono shock set up and the bike handled better too. so why Norton as gone for Mono shock beats me. and it would look better in the right frame for start off like the slimline featherbed and some real mudguards on it and a real metal tank none of your plastic stuff, that looks like something that window frames

are made of .

Trying to get back to the original thread of "proper" colour schemes for 961,s I am attaching one of the "Yellow" scheme originally offered in 2010 , but dont know how many actually bought one in this colour!

David

My Sport model is in Sunburst Yellow , as per your pic. Originally orderedDec 2010 when this was one of the offered colours on their website but subsequently removed fromthe standard colour schemes, bike was finally delivered Oct 2012. Great colour, andno problem for Norton to do it if that's what you want. The Norton van driver who collected my bike forits 500 mile first servicehad never seen a yellow one before so expect very few ordered.

Some nice variations, I still think silver looks the best smiley, but I could be tempted by the Domiracer tank.

Mrs Radcliffe Anna, it seemsthat the oil leaking from your Manxman has got into your eyes, 961s all have twin shocks!

well first off I said 961 Domiracer has Mono Shock . and there is no oil leaks on the Manxman I have sorted then out, and the leaks it did have was a oil seal in the gearbox kick-start shaft , and the timing cover as stripped thread on the bottom case screw, allowing oil to seep thought the gasket at the bottom of the case, now sorted , and Now I altering the seat pan as it was not made for the 2.1/2 gallon tank ,and you cannot get the right seat pans anymore , And it seem to me Men cannot get past have Black or Black and silver, Neutral Colours . the BASE colours are Blue Red and Yellow , black and white . gold.&silver are Neutral colours other colours and shades are made from these 3 base colours of blue red yellow to make new colour you add there gold or silver or some black or some white and you get different shades

so you can make your own colours if you wish to do so if you have the know how. but its fun mixing paint yours anna j

Don't bother responding to this we have heard it all before and it's boring! Lets get back to David's original question about 961 colour choices.

I know when I went to the factory four years ago I talked about buying a spare bodywork kit and having it painted myself. This way I could swap if I wanted to, the prices for a spare tank/sidepanels/seat was very reasonable at that time. Of course as has been said before Norton will paint to any colour you specify. However I like all the available standard options and there are a lot more than other manufacturers choices.

That is one benefit of low volume production. Who actually does the paintwork for Norton?

I assume it is still Dream Machine, it was when I was at the factory about 4 years ago. They do an excellent job so I don't think they would have changed.

I took delivery of my 961 a couple of weeks ago and can confirm Dream Machine still do the painting, they make a superb job of it too (my bike is finished in the silver Manx colours). Andy.
