Hi I'm in the middle of restoring my 88 cafe racer, i'v taken the old old tank off and fitted an aluminium central tank. I was wondering if anyone else on here has done the same and how did you go about connecting the oil feeds to the rockers thanks Simon

You can take the oil feed from the timing cover to the rockers as this is a pressure feed point. You can change the oil pump gears to a six speed type, and change the scrolled rocker spindles to the smooth type. I did this on my own 99 engine when I fitted an alloy Manx oil tank. There is also the option of fitting the oil return pipe from the standard earlier Dominators to the return feed of your new oil tank. The timingcover oil feed is the better option. There is also the option of opening up the oil feed in the crankcases, and putting oil holes in the con-rods as per the later engine modifications. I did all this to my own 99 motor in a wideline featherbed frame.

Hi Anthony, I got the bike as a partly stripped down project I think it was converted to a cafe race in the 60s so I'm flying blind on some parts of the restoration. So without sounding a complete thicko are the oil pipes going to the rockers feeding or returning the oil . thanks simon.

If you look at a later or after 1966 650ss or an Atlas or a Commando engine you will see that the rockers are pressure fed from an oil pipe that comes from a drilling underneath the pressure release valve. If you also look in the P106P handbook it will also give all the parts needed to do this conversion. You may still be able to get the oil feed return unit from RGM, to fit on the oil feed return to the oil tank, but for the oil pressure feed from the timing cover, you will need the timing cover. This you may already have as it may have a blanking bolt in it. Get one more oil feed bolt as per the ones that screw in the cylinder head, as well as the copper washers, and get the oil feed pipe. Get the plastic oil feed pipe as the copper one is prone to fracturing. You will need the Dominator feed pipe as the Commando feeds the rockers from the side of the cylinder and the Dominator one feeds the rockers from the top of the cylinder head. The other oiling modifications you can also do, but you will need a later oil feed junction block for the engine.

Much simpler and cheap to go with the oil return banjo ,which was what this motor was designed for. Fitting the high pressure system will either take away flow from the big ends or may involve you in work to pump,cover, oilways, drilled con rods and shells,oil control rings , rocker spindles , valve guides and seals. You can adjust the low pressure feed with a restrictor in the tank return which you can progressively drill out till you get what you need.

Simon... does the new tank prevent the original oiling arrangement from being used? Is this yet another trap for us to fall into?Regards David

Your second post suggests it was missing. The original feed taps some oil returning to the tank just before it enters. A thin tube goes to a T and that feeds two banjo fittings on top of the head.Oil returns down the push rod tubes and also a small drain tube with its own little hole in the head gasket buried behind the engine.David

Hi all thanks for your advice the new oil tank seems to be pretty straight forward 1 outlet with an internal wire mesh filter, 1 return and an overflow. The timing cover dose have a banjo fitting that has a pipe leading to the oil pressure gage I was wondering if I can T into this to feed the rockers thanks Simon

You could tee into that, there are however issues/dangers with this, you will be taking from the supply that feeds the big ends, you will flood the head if you don't make changes to the rocker spindles,you are introducing a potential source of high pressure leaks that could wreck your motor very quickly.( thats one of the reasons a gauge is not recommended).The high pressure system will bring the need for all the other alterations mentioned in previous posts. You do have buckets of spare cash ?.

there's a lot more to this then meets the eyeSmile I'll take your advice and get rid of the oil pressure gauge and connect the rocker oil feed pipe to the return. thanks once again, hopefully it will be completed in a few weeks so I will post a few pics on here p.s when i stripped the head down the rockers are highly polished it looks like there was a lot of work put into them is this normal?

Not 'normal' for the manufacturer.Do you know if you have:a) scrolled rocker shafts?b) 6 start worm on oil pump drive?... or either one without the other?You'll need to do some detective work to find out if you need high pressure oil feed or low.There's lots more written elsewhere in the technical sections of this site about pros and cons of such changes.

It looks as though you have a standard 3-start pump drive set-up, so it is low pressure fed from a banjo off the return pipe to the tank, as previously said.

Hopefully you didn't put the timing cover on straight after taking that photo? Apart from the crud on the auto advance and retard unit which will do your engine no good once it gets washed off by the hot oil, the two pegs on said unit are not located in their corresponding holes.

Something looks amiss with the cam-chain tensioner, too.

The photo was taken when I started stripping it down, just for future reference it all looks like new in there now. Smile
