Forums

Hi, I have been offer a set of commando connecting rods without the bottom caps. Are the connecting rods and caps machines as a set or can I fit other caps?

Hi Dave,

The caps are machiened together with the rods. Do not mix them up. There are scribe marks on both the cap and rod on one edge of the bolt tunnel. These marks should line up perfectly and not be mixed up. On my bike the previous owner mixed them up sadly, the bottom end farted and shat itself.

Good luck mate.

In theory a good engineer should be able to re-machine a set of completely unmatced components and fit shells that are OS on the overall diameter. This used to be common practise on some new car engines to reduce wastage of sub standard components. I expect it still happens where new rods are not to be found. Or when rods go oval.
