650SS Exhaust pipes

Forums
Hi... I'm soon going to need a pair of exhaust pipes for my '62/3 650SS rebuild. Looking in the club spares shop there are a pair (Part no. 24020/1) for the reasonable price of £131 +VAT, but there seems to be no way that I can add them to my "basket". It doesn't state that they are unavailable but do I have to assume that's the case? John

Are you looking at new or used items? If you are happy with second hand I may have a solution for you... J

I've just offered up the left hand exhaust pipe and silencer (thank you Jon Newton) and it's obvious that I need a triangular(?) plate to marry up the two threaded bosses on the silencer to the mounting hole for the pillion footrests on the frame, which is where I assume it attaches. I don't have these plates and looking at what's available from RGM and Andover Norton, none of their offerings look correct. Can anyone give me a part number, or dimensions for the plate/bracket that I need?

Hi John, When I got my 650 it still had the original factory exhaust pipes and silencers, and the brackets as supplied by Andover or RGM were identical to what was on my bike. I did have a replacement set of downpipes(Molnar) and original style silencers on the bike afterwards and the brackets weren't an issue.  I think that you need to move the silencers forward on the pipes and all will be clear. regards George

George... Thank you for your reply. The system I have is a second hand one, given to me by another member. The silencer is as far forward along the pipe as I can get it. There is a ring inside the silencer that butts up to the rear edge of the 1.5/8" section of pipe and stops it going any further forward. The front edge of the silencer tube is about midway along the larger pipe diameter. Were / are your brackets the straight strip of metal with a "joggle" in it and all three holes in line?  As things are with my silencer, the two mounting holes are about two inches to the rear of the footrest mounting hole in the frame. I could only move the silencer about an inch forward, if I removed the ring that currently stops the silencer going any further along the pipe.

What you have are non standard and you will have to make up a support. If you cut the pipes you are likely to find the silencers foul the frame or the  stand.

Hi John, Yes, my brackets are/were the straight ones with a small step. It sounds as though your silencers are to a pattern that is non original as I still have the ones that came with my bike and they are of a 'straight through' design, with some absorption material around a central perforated tube. Easiest 'fix' for you is to cut off say, a couple of inches from the downpipes.  Regards,  George

If the front of the silencer fouls the curve of the frame tube you can put a dent in the silencer to give clearance. Its not usually visible !.

Hi John.......My Exhaust System was purchased from Armours. It consisted of swept-back pipes and Gold Star type silencers for a Dominator.  The problem I had was similar to yours in that when the normal 3 hole in a line, kinked bracket was bolted in place, the footbrake and kickstart levers both fouled the silencer clips. My solution was a triangular bracket made of 6mm alloy, as shown in the photographs.  bracket Alloy Bracket
