1951 Model 18 laydown gearbox?

Forums

Hello.

I managed to have a short test ride out on my norton this week. The engine was good but the gearbox very hit and miss, mostly miss!

It is good once you eventually find the gear but selection is poor.

I have just stripped the box and found the camplate detent plunger is very worn and the spring weak. The gear selection ratchet and plate seems very sloppy. Although i am more used to dealing with japanese gearboxes, i have sucessfully sorted a very bad gearbox in my wifes old c15 with a little help from a classic moto x website.

Also i have found that the camplate is loose on its spline. Is this normal? or will I have to secure it to the spline? I can't see how the camplate being sloppy could be helping the gearchange. Some of the gearbox bushed seem a bit loose too. How much play is ok in these?

Thanks, Colin.

Yes I have the same problem with my 52 ES2, mainly due to wear in the cam plate and quadrant bushes, not a lot but sufficient to make a quick gear change iffy. However a slow positive change and no problem. Not bad enough to warrant a strip. I think its called character. John

This is far worse than that. I have found that the gear lever return spring cover has lots of wear and play and the bolts used as a shift stop are corroded and worn, allowing the gear change ratchet to over shift and not re center to allow selection of the next gear.

My question is, should the camplate be solidly attached to its spline, or free to float?

Thanks, Colin.

The camplate should be a light press fit on the splines. I don't know what would be considered a proper repair if you can't find a better one...maybe copper plating the splines ?

It sounds as though most of your problems lie with the selctor mechanism - new bushes and springs should help.

Within the box, the main point to check is the bronze thrust washer next to the sleeve gear. If worn, it will allow the whole cluster to move rather than rrespond to selction.

The thrust washer with the three oil ways in it looks okay. I'm fairly happy now having done a bit of welding on the ratchet plate and fitting a new spring and detent plunger that it should shift ok.

I had intended to tack weld the camplate onto its shaft, but i don't think that's the issue. If it is supposed to slide off then that's probably a bad idea. It's not a press fit at the minuteit can wobble a bit.

Thanks for the help.

Colin.
