Netley Marsh Auto-jumble

This coming week end sees the Netley Marsh auto jumble take place on 9th & 10th September.

I will be there on the Saturday having cleared my garage ready for a giveaway sale of Norton spares that I no longer need. This includes a near complete, ready to fit and run 1950 ES2 engine. ES2 petrol tank & engine plates. A refurbished Laydown gearbox. Plus a huge collection of good condition Dominator gear such as engine parts, primary cases, oil tanks, pushrods, silencers, pistons, new rings and more.

Apparently, Thursday evening was the big trading time amongst sellers who were camping at the  Netley A/J.. So possibly, the bargains had already been snapped up before Joe Public's day on the Friday. Which also saw the odd heavy shower pass by.

At least it stayed dry all day on the Saturday but I might as well have had a stall in the local graveyard.  The footfall was that poor.

Fortunately, I was able to flog enough bits and pieces to enough desperate people and came away with extra cash in my wallet.  This included selling a complete ES2 engine with Magdyno and Carb that was almost ready to fit in a frame and run.

By 2.00 pm most sellers were packing up and departing. Back home I discovered more boxes of spare Norton bits and pieces that there had not been room in for in the car..

Therefore I have booked a stall at Kempton on 24th September. There was also the possibility of having a stand at Shepton Mallet in November but the closing date for entries was last Monday.

One drawback of a Kempton A/J is the change of entry times to allow the 'early bird' punters to roam around. This in turn has led to a demand by the organisers for sellers to set up by 7.30 am.  Which probably means starting off in the dark, as well as hoping for a dry day. What I don't like about these 'early bird' entries is that they gather like wolves and get in the way of setting up a stall. Some even opening  the doors of the car to check out items.

I didn't see you at Netley, Phil...Whereabouts were you ? I came in briefly on Thursday evening to pick up a friend who had set up a stand but I only really spent Friday there as Saturday has long been a Beaulieu day for me. The first Netley in a long time where I bought absolutely nothing and didn't even spot any WD Norton engine numbers to photograph. I fear the end is nigh. A shame as it used to be one of the best for older parts.

To my mind, it lost a lot when the sales marquee was discontinued.

I haven't been to Kempton since pre-covid but I used to do the early ticket simply to avoid the queuing after an all-night drive. In before eight and time for a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich before it all started. I never had the nerve to hassle stall holders who were still setting-up.

Hi Richard.....I could only make the Saturday as I felt that paying £60 plus for the two days was a bit over the top for a private garage clearance seller. The Saturday stall charge was also for one person only with a single helper costing another £10. Whereas for a punter it was only £6 to get in. Work that one out?  My wife and I had a stall in a middle row next to a BSA bits seller.  I did  not see any other stall with mainly Norton spares. When we arrived the hawks descended in numbers mostly asking for 16H parts, Dommi Timing Covers and AMC clutches.

The second Netley day has always suffered from the conflict with the Beaulieu A/J. I don't think there were more than 40 stalls, in total, on the Saturday at Netley. The organisers of NM just cannot see that their rip off prices put the average Joe Soap off from having a stall if they don't think they have much gear of any value.

The Kempton charge for a stall includes 2 adults but the killer early set-up time now being demanded is silly.  Then, after 6 hours standing around in cold or wet weather I would be wanting to leave asap. At this time of year a later start would help everybody.

Netley is still much cheaper for sellers than Beaulieu. I heard £350 for the weekend there....which is why Beaulieu sellers were asking £30 for 5l of 'Golden Film' rather than the £20 which I saw at Netley. I enjoy Beaulieu a lot. It's more a festival than a jumble and it's enjoyable to browse without buying. No 1980s Japanese plastic parts to step over either.

I've never quite understood why Kempton Park opens and closes quite so early. It's all done by 2.00 pm. It's certainly not aimed at those who travel far and doesn't make the best use of winter daylight.

I'm not actually looking for much at the moment, but I picked up some nice dull chromed early-WD Amal 276 parts at Beaulieu which will replace tattier parts on the bike...and my pre-war Norton sparking plug collection is going from strength to strength.

I used to always attend N/M auto jumble on the Friday and then have two days at Beaulieu a/j when they were independently organised with plenty of stalls and sensible prices, but like so many of them now days they are run by conglomerates such as Morton’s Media Group and it’s all about ripping the stall holders and the punters off. Now I only do the Saturday at Beaulieu and this year it seemed down on stall holders numbers. I did buy Golden Film though for £20 for 5l which I observed at £35 on other stalls.

Don't forget there are very reasonable pitches at the South of England Classic Motorcycle events, at the South of England  Showground, Ardingly, near Gatwick RH17 6TL. Garage clear-out pitches are just £20, with a choice of indoor or outside space available.

2023 Dates are Sunday 26/3/23; 30/7/23 & 29/10/23, independently run by noc members  www.elk-promotions.co.uk
