Patent badge Model 77 1958 timing cover

Forums

The patent badge on the timing cover of my 1958 model 77 is just brass with no trace of paint. Were they ever supplied like this or would they have been filled in with paint? If so, would it be black or red for this year?

I would have thought that a 1958 would have had the round chrome and enamel timing cover badge, having said that I have never seen any paint on the timing cover mounted patent badges, the ones on the drive side crankcase were always filled in red until later when at least some of them were yellow.

I seem to remember Red on some. But also a lot with just polished brass. Perhaps someone could look in any old pictures? Of course most will be black/white but then Red should show up as a dark colour, and should be distinguished from Black. We await searching of pictures. Or further understanding.

The 1954 bike on page 14 of Bacon's Norton Twins Restoration looks very black with brass letters. But of course it's a b&w picture. And the tank livery is very much non standard.

Another on page 42 also looks probably black.

The book is a vital resource if you want things to look original.
