Steering lock stops on S/L frames

Forums

Evening all, looking for some S/L frame info.

Now that my #2 S/L is finally back from being de-bent, I’ve noticed yet another bit needing rectifying. Just happened to have this bare 64 Atlas frame next to another old frame, (my first ‘61 88) and spotted a change under the headstock where there is a gusset plate covering the uppermost part of the front downtubes. This is where the steering lockstop goes, to restrict the amount of turn available at the bars and so prevents forks bashing the petrol tank or getting trapped fingers.

The 88, as best I recall, has a triangular plate bolted to this gusset, and would presumably on very early f/bed frames have been part of the steering damper mount. Think this also had a hole to permit a padlock fitment, prior to the 7 3/8” forks with integral steering lock.

The Atlas frame clearly had something welded at the factory, as the retaining bolt holes are not there.

Any pics- and ideally a dimensioned diagram- will assist me in getting a suitable stop plate welded in place.

Alternatively, anyone got a surplus one of the earlier bolt-on plates?

Cheers all.

Thats great Phil, thanks! I think this will be an easier fix than trying to get something made up and welded, not sure how the wider yokes might affect the operation of this but I'm sure it can only be marginal. I'll do a comparison of the 2 bottom yokes.

Norvil twice RGM's price, and the # not recognised in the club shop, so I'll order one up from Roger and see how I get on.

i've probably got the old 88 one buried deep in a box somewhere, but at this price it's a lot less faff!

PS like your one!

Hi Michael,

You probably have enough info already, but attached a few photos of the plate on my ‘63 Atlas with 7” yokes - stop plate is original as far as I am aware. It is heavy 4-5mm steel.

hope that helps,

Holger

Good evening Holger, thanks for your photos. The bolt-on plate that I ordered from RGM arrived today, so that will no doubt come in handy when I get to spend some time on the Atlas, as its still project #2 for now.

Going by the frame number I estimate my Atlas to be a mid-64 bike, so I guess I should build it with 7 3/8" forks, but I would still be intrigued to see photos of a later bike with the welded bracket I suspect has been cut off from mine.

With friendly greetings

Mike
