Forums

I am rebuilding a Navigator gearbox, can anyone please help me as what is the right sleeve gear fitted to an early gearbox, because the one fitted in my box does not look right (see photos) to mutch play

Duncan ,from your pictures  it looks like you have the wrong gear mating with the sleeve gear . i think you are trying to use  the layshaft second gear (25 teeth ) , where you should use the main shaft 3rd gear (25 teeth).    the dogs on the layshaft 2nd gear fit into the holes in the layshaft 1st gear . do you have a copy of the spare parts list , as this shows a gearbox assembly in detail .

Thanks for your reply and yes i do have a copy of the parts list,  B38 mainshaft 3rd gear (25 teeth) and B47 layshaft 2nd gear (25 teeth) have tha same part number (041276) so according to the parts list they are both the same gear.

Early parts list give the same part number (041276) for layshft 2nd & mainshaft third - but the sleeve gear looks different & has holes in it, rather than doge as you have.

On 1961-on bikes, the sleeve gear changes to having dogs (as you have), and mainshaft third changes correspondingly --- mainshaft 3rd is now 044076, whilst layshaft 2nd now looks like yours and is numbered 044082.

The earlier identical gear (041276) does not have the chamfer as yours does - it is undercut instead.

See sketch attached.....
