Sleeve gear oil seal spacer ring

Hi. I’ve rebuilt the gearbox for my Dommie 99 project. The sleeve gear turns fairly easily without the sprocket in place (photo below), but when I put the gearbox sprocket on and tighten the gearbox sprocket nut, it becomes more difficult to turn the sleeve gear (by using the sprocket to turn it). I’ve found that the metal spacer ring (photo below) that fits into the sleeve gear oil seal doesn’t turn within the oil seal so that when the sprocket turns, the boss on the back of the sprocket ‘grinds’ against the metal spacer ring (as the ring doesn’t turn). The spacer ring was really difficult to fit into the oil seal - in fact it needed driving in with a drift and hammer. I’m assuming that I’ve got a bad mix of parts and that the spacer ring should indeed turn when the gearbox sprocket turns - is that correct? If my guess about the spacer needing to turn is correct, I guess I need to try a different supplier for those parts.

Defintely something wrong.

The spacer should press easily into the seal with your fingers and should rotate in the seal like every other shaft turning in an oil seal that you've come across. The spacer should hold the sprocket away from the gearbox shell and oil seal but does require that the bearing is fully seated in the gearbox shell; it might have been dislodged when you clouted it with a hammer.

I only have Commando spacers but I think they are the same. They measure 0.191" thick, 1,687" od , 1.250" id.

Thanks Stan. One (or possibly both) of the parts are obviously the wrong size so I’ve ordered a new seal and steel spacer from Norvil - Les Emery assures me that their spacer is the correct fit in the seal so should be an easy fix, thankfully.
