Thread size and type for spin on oil filter head mounting holes?

Forums

Does anyone know what the thread size and type is for the two mounting holes on a spin on oil filter head for a lightweight (Jubilee)?

The one I purchased from NOC shop (063139) has very poor threads that I can't identify and will need re-tapping. The metal is soft so I will get only one chance to re-tap the threads.

Many thanks,

Dennis

Dennis,

You could clamp it with longer, smaller diameter bolts through the existing holes with nuts and washers. Or you might think think this is an unacceptable bodge.

The 063139 Oil Filter Head is a common choice amongst Norton Twin owners. Most of the versions I have come across have RGM written on them.

The 2 mounting bolts or studs are between 20 to 25mm long and have metric threads. Those on my filter heads are 8mm x 1.25mm.

Many thanks for the replies. I should have made it clear that the threads I am enquiring about are the the ones in the blind holes of the cartridge filter head. Unfortunately, the head supplied by NOC shop is unbranded. However, Philip made a good call as the threads are 8 x 1.25mm.

I have had to ret-tap them but now the threads are good to go.

For some reason I was not expecting metric threads. One more thread-type to add to the extensive list used on a Jubilee!

oil filtersMakes me wonder if RGM has changed their threads. For almost 30 years I have used 5/16-24tpi bolts on OEM norton, norvil and  RGM and never had to run a tap into them. I even use them on my oil filter brackets for slimlines. What is the thread on the factory norton bolt?

I'm sure that original Commando is 5/16" UNF as Dave says....The filter may be metric threaded, but I've not found any small fasteners to the Napoleonic standard on Commandos.

I would have said 5/16 UNC seeing as the threads are tapped into aluminium.

All of these units I have worked on or installed I have soldered a piece of wire around the ends of each pipe to form a barb to help the flexible hose stay on and stop leaks.

One other thing to be aware of, I had one case of the internal paint flaking off and nearly blocking off the internal gallery!  Not saying it was an RGM unit because I can't remember, but I make a point to scrapping all the paint off the insides now.

My filter head from NOC shop is definitely threaded M8 x 1.25; I do not know about RGM ones.

I could not use the mounting bracket supplied by NOC shop as I could not figure out how to attach it to the frame of my Jubilee. In the end I made a flat plate and attached the plate to the side stand stop bracket. The height of the filter is critical in this position because if it is too low it is hit by the centre stand when the stand is raised. I might have been able to use the NOC supplied bracket by attaching it to the mudguard bracket but space is vey tight in there.

Maybe everybody is right.   My comparison tables equates M8 x 1.25mm with UNF 5/16 x 24. I am guessing the thread forms may differ but clearly not enough to be a problem.  My Filter head definitely uses M8 locknuts to hold it in place.  Perhaps one of our NOC member engineers could check this thread issue out for the rest of us.
