Centre stand bracket position

Forums

Hi does anyone know the best way to reinstate the centre stand brackets correctly on a slimline frame. There are presently none welded on my frame and having removed the paint in the area where they should have been fitted I can see no indication of where they were fitted. I have looked at a technical frame drawing which gives me distance along the bottom rail to the centre of the brackets but I cannot find any measurements as where they fit to on the diameter of the bottom frame tube or the angle. Any help would be appreciated on how I could do this or where I could send it to have them fitted if no other option was available.

Thanks.

Hi Neal,

The centre line for the stand is obtained by using the holes in the rear engine plates, that does not seem to be used for any other purpose, behind where engine is connected, it should have a small bolt from the bracket on the frame through the stand pivot bolt ( which is hollow) to 'stiffen' the engine and gearbox in the frame, otherwise the only mounting points are at the front and back of the engine plates, ( many people forget these bolts)

I wrote a letter a few years ago about these missing bolt! In Roadholder, DONT FORGET TO FIT THEM especially the one on the chaincase side, as it can't be retro fitted after fitting the chaincase.

Hi John,

never mind about about a lot of people forgetting these bolts, I think that Nortons themselves must have forgotten them because I have never been able to find them in any of the parts lists that I have, please describe them more fully, are they screwed into the centre stand bolt or do they have a nut on the outside?

Neal: if I were doing this I would assemble crankcases and engine plates to the frame, then invert it. Andover Norton sell many loose brackets for the featherbed frame, if not, assemble the centre stand and bolts, locating them using the engine plate holes as John says using some stud iron right through, if possible, and then make cardboard patterns for the brackets. They sit parallel  to the engine plates not the tube axis, so they must have a radius on them where they sit on the tube.

Shouldn't  be too difficult, good luck.

Hi Thanks both for all your help it has been of great assistance the only difficulty I have at the moment is that my engine plates are after market alloy ones with no holes and also the bike never came with a centre stand. but from the information you have provided I should be able to make progress. Cheers

Hi Niall

Acording to Philip Field in RH 373 Jan 2019 the p/n for the bolt is 18649, and nut T2017, this artical is in response to my letter in RH 371 (Nov 2018) but any nut and bolt that will fit through the stand pivot hole would do as long as it is long enough to clamp the engine plate also.

Neal.....when I posted my original letter in RH 371 I enclosed a photo showing the bracket for the stand you require, if you can get a copy it may help you to fabricate a replacement.......good look

Regards John O
