Norton Commando Colours 1971 Fastback

Forums

Hi All

I have a Norton Commando Fastback 1971 at the moment it is painted red with black side covers.

I want to repaint to the factory colour of Fireflake blue.

Did 1971 Fastbacks have black side covers or are they the same colour as the tank.

I have look all over and cannot find any evidence of the fastback. Roadsters and Interstates seemed to be matching.

Any info would be great

Many thanks

Stephen

Trying to remember the '70s...

I knew 3 people with Fastbacks - one solid british racing green, one solid red, one metalflake orange (probably golden bronze from above). No pinstripes. The red and orange ones had black side panels (=oil tank). The green one had silver sidepanels. Don't ever recall seeing a Fastback back then with other than black or silver side panels.

The metalflake was in the gelcoat. I would imagine it would be difficult to reproduce the size of flake and depth of colour in paint.

Hi Stephen

I had a 1972 Fireflake Blue Commando back in the day. Best colour in my opinion.

Side panels were black. Panels were fibreglass with gelcoat

Isn't it the case that the early exposed oil tank models were silver and those with two detachable panels had black ?  The use of a 'neutral' colour preserved the horizontal seat / tank line.

As far as I can tell from the brochures, Red and Racing Green with silver (plus the two-tone) and all the rest black.

Hi Stan

I have the original fibreglass tank and the fastback cover. They have had a couple of paint upgrades since the original paint of the 70s

I won't be able to fully copy the original paint but will do my best to match. I have all the gear to respray so its just a matter of getting a good base coat and see how I go with the flakes in the clear.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply.

Can you remember what colour the decals on the tank and side covers where.

Do you have any pics of the bike.

Love to see if you have any.

Cheers
