Mudguard colour

Forums

Hi

I have a 57 Dominator with a silver tank.

Currently the mudguards, oil tank etc are all black.

Is this correct and is there any way of finding out what the original colours were for me to use as a guide.

Any info will help please

I think Roy Bacons Restoration book lists the yearly colour changes. I will  look tomorrow.

Up to and inc 1957 the std finish  was polychromatic grey  with chrome tank with the grey panels on sides and top. chrome rims with grey center lined with red . 1957 the tank painted grey with chrome side panels . There also was an optional finish with black frame mudguards, oil tank, toolbox ,tank chrome plated with silver panels lined black and red.. Rims chrome with silver centers red lined .

Thanks for the reply, it seems I have the grey with chrome side panel tank and all black bits. Not sure if this is standard as it sounds from that description that they should be grey.

If they were grey, do you know if the frame stays black please, I don't plan to change them unless I need to paint them anyway but it would be good to know for future plans.

I've added a photo to show the current colours of my bike

Your bike looks great to me.

Unless you are trying to do a 100 point concours/restoration I would leave it the way it is and just ride it knowing that it will look better than 95% or more of the bikes on the road.

How does it run/ride?

Thanks, i'm of the same mind to be fair. It rides really well and now that I've got a starting system there's no dramas with that, a few frustrating days until I worked it out.

I'm working through the bike and catching up on maintenance through the winter so it's bringing a few challenges as I get into it.

I'm going to concentrate on the mechanicals and leave the paint until it's needed in future years. Touch up will do on the few bits that are getting to me.

It's bought to ride but I plan to keep it up to scratch. If  / when I have to do any major work I may consider the paint, I was interested if they should be chrome. Now I know they're not, it's an easier fix when I choose to do it

Thanks

With a black frame you should have black mudguards.  With a Poly Grey frame it should be poly grey mudguards.  Yours looks fine in the black with silver tank.  They look even better with chrome mudguards, optional from 1958.  That was the finish for my 1959 '99'.

Unfortunately Roy Bacon's book isn't comprehensive enough regarding colours as it rarely mentions mudguards.  For 1957 he says the petrol tanks are finished in grey - this would mean that the frame and mudguards were also grey.  Your colours would be correct for a 1958 model.
