Grubby business ahead

Forums

Help! Just discovered another problem with the Electra bits. The rocker oilways in the cylinder heads are blanked off with tiny grubscrews (#20873); one is missing completely- I can insert a probe right to the bottom, a good inch or more.

Of course not listed in the NOC shop or on Norvil. Any ideas what the actual size is?

Anybody ever successfully removed one? Heat head up in the oven first? I have a spare head that I could strip.

Michael,

I don't know about the Electra but on the Jubilee there is a drilled passage in the rocker arm support that is blanked at the top by a grub screw. This is a manufacturing process presumably to allow the oil way to be drilled from above but fed with oil from below.  If the Electra is the same then any suitable grub screw could be be used by re-tapping the hole with the correct thread for the grub screw.

I looked at removing the grub screws on my Jubilee. They are badly corroded but oil tight. Looks like galvanic corrosion. I decided that if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Hi Michael,

Not such tiny grub screws. Norton fitted screws with a slotted head. So use a quality screwdriver of the right size and in good condition and out they come.

All the grub screws used in lightweight timing cover and cylinder head oilways are the same.

Good luck removing one from your spare head.

Peter
