Magneto Fade

Forums

The Magnetto on my project 88 as far as I know last run in 1988, would it be possible for it to work? on stripping the machine lot of engine work seems to have been done, but I feel it has never been started as combustion chamber clean as clean. any help on this please.

Not run is a bit of a warning.  Probably would not run.  Could be any number of silly issues. Mag is easy to do a basic check for spark.  50/50 on whether it needs professional attention.

The key to reliable starting is a good magneto.

I always get an expert to check over a magneto before using it on a rebuild.

The person working on the bike was my sister husband, I don’t think he got to trying to start the bike, but do think he did engine work. Maybe I will setup a spark test.

You may be lucky, but I wouldn't put money on it. Remember that just because a magneto can generate a spark in open air when motored that doesn't mean it will perform the same trick when subjected to a fuel-soaked atmosphere at combustion chamber pressures.

There are a number of magneto specialists out there, but I can recommend Peter de Kremer (Rutland Dynamos: http://www.rutlanddynamos.co.uk). Peter is a friendly guy and offers excellent after-sales service; he gave me a very helpful telephone refresher on techniques for finding t.d.c.

He did two k2fc’s for me last year. Beautiful work and exactly 180 degree separation.

cheers

Will probably get mine done properly as a good  spark is what the old girl needs
