clutch cable break

Forums

had my clutch cable break today , it looks like the top nipple has split in half , think it is routed nicely and not  heavy to pull in , possibly a dodgy cable as only done about 1500 miles , has any one had this happen or do you think i hadn't set it up right

Did the cable have a loose barrel nipple at the lever end? and how worn/old is the clutch lever?

After many miles/years the clutch lever pivot and lever housing in the switch bracket will have worn to the extent that the lever assumes a drooping stance. This promotes the cable to wear away at the slot in the lever itself so putting the nipple under stress as the the slot width increases. Loose nipples are weaker than solid ones. Nipples that are too short also give problems. The nipple should be at least as long as the lever is thick, ideally a little longer to guarantee full nipple engagement with the lever. A lot of the new cables available suffer from short nipple syndrome
