I am in the process of giving my 650SS something of a spring clean, stripping items from the machine to get at and clean parts that can't be properly reached during 'normal' cleaning. Working my way from the front of the bike I am now at the oil tank area, and have just removed it. Looking at the back of it, i.e.the side facing the battery box, I have found two threaded holes (1/4" BSF). I have absolutely no idea what these are for. Does anybody else have any clues?

Slimline oil tank.
Can't really help with that. When I got the bike (in 1978), it had been badly cafe racered, so didn't have standard oil tank. In fact, it didn't have much of anything any good apart from the large lumps. All the tinware bits I had to source from all over the place, using things like the 'Exchange & Mart' and the like(no world wide web back then, at least, not for the likes of me).

The threaded holes have been…
The threaded holes have been there at least since the start of the slimline. They are the mounting points for the box filter back plate. I have one on my 60 99 It was produced by Les Emerys co and is a copy of the one Norton made. It works with a single carb. and connects to a carb ring with a short concertina hose. onto a stub outlet from the filter box. The filter element is not purpose made but can be fabricated from half an Austin Mini one. The battery box has to be removed to get at it. A bit clumsy but better than nothing.Next time I take my battery out I will take a photo. Who Knows by then I may have learnt how to post one.

Slimline oil tank.
Thanks, Robert,
After writing and posting my query, I wondered if it might be something to do with the air filters. My machine is kitted up to breathe fresh(?) air straight from the atmosphere, so I will not need to worry about the holes. I'll sleep better tonight now.

I fitted an air filter to my 59 - 99, I believe it's called the 'Vokes' type and used an Austin Mini filter cut in half as the element.
It works great and gives me peace of mind being on a plus 60 bore. And yes, you have to remove the battery box to get at the filter, but I made that relatively simple by using some quality wiring connectors.

A simple cone or foam filter…
A simple cone or foam filter would be a good thing .I am now a convert to filtration due to the scarecity of barrels and the cost of pistons.

Hi Bob Matthews, Yours is…
Hi Bob Matthews, Yours is much simpler and easier to fit than mine!. A different design.Mine is the size of the oil tank and not the better for it. Yours is Vokes type.. May not fit my bike which has the earlier non DD head I think.

Guessing: Coils on distributor models? Air filter mounting on singles and single carb models?
Others with much more knowledge of these bikes will know for sure.
On mine, I made up a plate to fit into/onto the rear of the tank uaing these holes and that now carries the twin coil, the voltage regulator and indicator relay.
