Horn - 6V or 12V? | Norton Owners Club

I have been using my 6V altette for 25 years on 12v. As you say, LOUD!. I think you can service it and adjust it if you want to.

The little Bakelite triangle around the terminals normally shows the month and year of manufacture and 6v or 12v.

Thanks Colin, I'll check that. Robert - what would happen if mine is 12V but the bike is 6V?

This is just a guess but if it works at all the tone will be very low and anemic.

The power generated in the 12V coil by the 6V supply will not be very strong if at all.

It is possible that the armature will not be pulled in far enough to open the contacts which will generate just a click and nothing more,

Do a test run by using some jumper cables from the battery to the horn

Yep. I've done that, Mike. Your assessment of what happens (clicking) is exactly what happens. That's what set me thinking it's a 12V model.

...would give you the answer. Roughly 0.16 for 6 volt, 0.7 for 12volt.
