Lay down gearbox

Forums

 Hi everyone,

I am stripping down a lay down gearbox on my 1954 ES2. My problem is that I am trying to remove the cover over the kick start shaft spring fitted to the outer cover part no A2/358

stated in the illustrated spare parts list. It’s solid and don’t want to damage it! Is it threaded, left or right hand thread? I’m removing it to check kick start bush and to polish the case. I have tried turnIng it left and right, also tried to persuade it with a nylon mallet, no luck!  Any help would be appreciated.  Ps, plate TN no 46 in spare parts list.

New to the site and finding it very helpful. Regards Rob.

Robert,

It is only a friction fit, it is not threaded.  It's easier to take the spring cover off before taking the outer gearbox cover off as it allows you to tap the end whilst it's all held firmly in the frame.

Perhaps a hot air gun may heat it enough to start it moving.

The kick start spring cover is not threaded. The techniques you have described would normally be enough to move the cover. Might someone have bonded the cover in place? If so you could try heat, that should help release any adhesive.

Thanks Ian,

Now I no it’s a push fit I will get it out, just didn’t want to brake anything.

                  Regards Rob.

Yes your right before you make a mess of anything! New to the site and a mind of information.

Started going to bed a lot later now , just reading the forum. The spring cover is off, just wanted the heat gun. Thanks for the message and also thanks to Phil and Ian. Take care in these crazy times.

                      Regards Rob.
