Just been in receipt of an email from a Neil Wilson quoting my ad (from this forum) for hub trims. Stating he’d got them plus anything else I want from a 65 Jubilee he was breaking and included a picture (attached). Language was a bit “off” and bike looked to good to “break” so I googled the picture and found an identical one from 4 years ago from a sales site, sales blurb was bike was from a collection & rebuilt. DVLA says still taxed.
Am I being overly cautious and NW is genuine (name doesn’t come up on a forum search) or is it a scam!?
Probably is a scam
.I mentioned on a website that I was interested in what had become of my first bike, a DMW Coronation and gave registration number. I had several contacts from the USA claiming to have it and that they would sell it to me. Photos attatched to their emails were lifted from pictures of totally disimilar DMW 's from magazine articles.
It is a good idea to run a check on the source of such emails and see if it really comes from the person who has contacted you.
Email address comes up as a genuine one, have had a couple of exchanges from it - but - it just seemed too good to be true!
It looks to be such a nice bike that you ask yourself why would you scrap if?
Does he live near enough for you or some other member to check it out?
Don’t know - contents of email make it suspicious so haven’t followed it up any further! I’ll ponder it over the next few days and see if he contacts me again.
i agree, looks too “nice” to break plus use of sales photo makes me wary!
Ask him why he’s breaking it, odd he’s willing to sell the trims and not the whole wheel?! Def suspicious!
He had stated breaking due to “low maintenance reasons” over the years and to let him know what else I might want then he’d discuss money. Whole tone of emails was dubious. I might try him for an address!
"low maintenance reasons" would make me run a mile I'm afraid - unless of course the personst first language is not English.
I also had a Neil Wilson contact me about my wanted advert (Commando light lens) and he claimed he had a Commando for breaking. Didn’t like the sound of the e/mails so didn’t follow up. Looks like a scammer!
Thanks Mike - just about confirms my suspicions, I’ll give any more contact a miss! Bit worrying he’s “picking” on wants ads from this forum/club though!!
Have you guys ever thought that a Norton light weight as been stolen and so been stripped down to sell of the parts so they end up with more Cash from someone,s hard work it's these people that need catching. Yours Anna j
Anna - yes I had given that some thought but without any details (except an email address) of who this person is (hence the original start to this post) it would be difficult for me to do anything except refuse to deal with him. I’m normally cagey about my whereabouts from a theft viewpoint so it comes naturally to assume others are as well. This person hasn’t even given a name to use, the email uses some strange English language and punctuation and shows my “want ad” from here as being “lifted” either direct from the forum or search engine.
Suffice to say, I won’t be dealing with him/her.
In response to my parts Wanted Add on NOC site had a response from a Neil Wilson.
He says he is breaking a Model 7 plunger for parts "because of lack of maintenance and due to the scarcity of parts in my end"
Nice bike far too pretty to break See attached file Neil Model 7 plunger
In response to my Wish List as below he quoted me U$350 + $15 for shipping to UK from Oregon USA. So big Red Flag on that one
- Rear and front fenders and stays.
- Prop stand and centre stand
- Chain guard
- solo seat
So did some online research and found same bike with UK registration on Classic-Motoebikes.net. See attachedClassic-Motorbikes file and second Red Flag.
I have sent my findings to our Membership Secretary and this fellow is not and NOC member.
Hoping there can be a broadcast message to all members to be aware of this and other scammers.
I have also had an email response from "Neil" regarding my wanted ad for Jubilee styling panels. Same story.
We will have to stop putting our contact information on the adverts. Could we beef up our PM service?
