Dominator silencer volume level

Dominator silencer volume level

I own a 1962 Dominator fitted by the previous owner with new silencers. When I first got the bike it sounded like a centurion tank going into battle. Being too loud and at the recommendation of the manufacturer I fitted  baffles. There was not much space for wadding and it only made a small difference. I would like silencers that sound like the originals; as fitted to the Norton I owned in the 60’s/70’s. This bike could be used late night or early morning without disturbing the local neighbourhood.

Does anybody know an effective way of modifying a new loud silencer to give it an authentic quieter tone ? Alternatively is there a manufacturer out there who makes a silencer with a similar sound to the original ?

The original silencers were lined with glassfibre   sound absorbing wadding which eventually blew out.  I don't think this is done today.  You could fit some baffles as fitted to straight thro pipes  in the pipes in front of the silencers.

Further to Robert's mail, when I bought mine from Armours they told me that the wadding encouraged internal corrosion, especially on short trips where it did not heat through, so they did not use it any more.

If the valve timing pinions and/or the camshaft sprocket has/have not been aligned correctly it is possible that the exhaust valve is opening too soon. The engine will still run but end up firing straight through into the exhaust system. The result is an incredibly noisy engine and not a great deal of forward motion.

Hello, the original silencers were all made in house for the1957 smooth look  this type were all welded on the underside, not like Armourers Do their aftermarket ones, with that big fold at the bottom,   I have one original left-hand side one,  And amazon DB busters At14.95  is on the expensive side you can get them from E-bay for 9.99, saving you a fiver,  So you find most domie silencers are  copies of Copies, And now Armouers Do not make their own any more there all farmed out  to Tim Wassel and most of his stuff is incorrect, Like 650 downpipes  that go under the frame on the right-hand side and have No chance of marring with the silencer, I think Anthony Curzon it's doing the right job And the Club should support him, Since this Club is biased against me, to do anything for the club ,                     Yours  Anna J,

I tried the Armours silencer too. They say that they have redesigned the baffle to do the same job, but I suspect it is because it is easier to make.

I had  an original silencer with the correct baffle and searched for a good replica. I bought mine from www.classicbikeshop.co.uk. the baffles are correct but do not have the wadding. They sound OK but I only have one as it is on my 61 ES2!

My 99 has Armours silencers which I assumed would be as effective, as the originals, which I foolishly sold for SFA at Beaulieu because they looked tired. The new silencers looked OK but are very noisy even with a full-face helmet. What the public think I don't want to know. I'd be very interested to hear any member's experience of Db killers as harsh noise is tiresome on a long trip.

My bike has Armours and as I mentioned top of the page I fitted baffles to quieten them. This did make a bit of a  difference in volume but not in tone or sound level when compared to the originals. However I think it was worth doing as a stop gap and the bike is more pleasant to ride.

I used 40mm by 200mm end baffles obtained on ebay. I made them a bit longer using some alloy caravan TV pole which I filled with holes, bell ended, and hammered onto the baffle. These were wrapped in silencer wadding. This cost about £20 in total.

Thanks to everyone who provided information on the topic.
