Dominator 88 and 99

Hello,

How powerfull of these models ? 88 = 29 hp and 99 =  32 hp ?

Depends which version, what revs you are prepared to give it.  And I doubt if standards of accuracy of 1950's dynamometers are the same as today's...if those are the book figures for an engine on the bench then those are the figures...

The SS versions were significantly higher - listed at 36 for the 88SS.  It would be interesting to know if anyone has risked testing one at full power at 7000 rpm on modern machinery.  I'm not lending you mine.

The 600 Nomads produced 36 BHP, but it all depends on what state of tune and components that you have in the engine.

The truth is that nobody can tell you for certain, the quoted figures look to be reasonable. Nowadays we tend to use a rolling chassis dyno and measure power at the back wheel which is less than that generated by the engine. Manufacturers were  prone to quoting best figures with ancillaries removed.

But as with a Rolls Royce,

Question, what is the power output?

Answer , Adequate.

More to the point, a well set up 88 (back in the day) was capable of cruising from London to Lancashire most weekends at 70/80 mph on about I/3rd throttle and do 60 mpg . A 99 was about the same but needed to be driven through a vibration period and was more tiring to do long distances. With aged and unreliable rods it would be wise to reduce the speed by 10 mph today, which means you are going to be constantly harassed by  HGV's and  texting women with cars full of kids doing 80 mph ( my experience!) . Stick to burbling through leafy lanes and A roads. You could of course fit a 76 degree crank atlas motor in featherlastic mountings and join the motorway  rat race.

Thank you very much Philip,this is exactly what I was looking for and what I had in mind but my 3 dominators (before 3 commandos) was from 1968 to 1971.
