Swinging arm spindle

Forums

Replacing the bushes and spindle. Does anyone happen to know what size bolt will fit into the threaded spindle centre?

It's 1/2" UNF. You can use the front (or rear) Isolatic bolt to screw into it. Gives you a decent size to grab hold of.

I did mine just recently and was told at the time that the bushes are very hard wearing, try the new spindle for size before pulling out the original bushes.

My spindle was in a terrible state, but when I fitted the new spindle into the original bushes it was a perfect fit with no play.

Never be tempted to try grease, the bushes are sintered and porous and absorb and store the oil. Use grease and the pores get blocked and the bushes run as if dry and wear out. EP140 was specified as it was thickest available oil, so less prone to leak but any oil will do, chainsaw chain oil works well.

A good way to put the oil into the spindle is via the central bolt on top of the swing arm spindle, remove the bolt fill with oil replace the bolt.

Found this out after I had done it the other way.

yon bolt you're talking about was murder to get back in. My arthritic fingers when cold are almost useless. It's in and it's staying in!

When I replaced my spindle and bushes I ended up having to ream the bushes to get the new spindle in! Whilst it was all in bits I took the opportunity to make a new bolt to replace that tricky little beggar . The one I made had a hole through the middle and a tube out of the other end. To that went a length of clear plastic tube, which runs up the frame to a convenient point near the oil tank filler. Every time the seat is off I drop a bit of EP140 down the end of said tube and off we go!
