Vernier cam gear

Forums

Dear Sir

I have an 850 Commando and want to fit a vernier camshaft sprocket as supplied by Norvil. I have phone Les Emery a couple of times but am a bit confusedas to how to do this. does anyone know or can anybody help on how to set the sprocket to the correct timing. The camshaft I am using is a 4s.

Thank you

Not done this with a vernier sprocket but seems straightforward. What is it you are having problems with? At the risk of stating the obvious first you have to find true TDC with a degree disc and dial guage coming off a tappet. Have the cam and crank assembled dot to dot, 10 rollers apart on the cam to idler. Then rotate engine in normal direction until 65 deg BTDC is reached. With vernier nut loosened and dowel removed from cam centre/boss rotate cam anti clock viewed from timing side until an inlet tappet starts its lift and at 0.013" of lift stop. Identify dowel holes that will allow entry of dowel with minimal rotation of sprocket (and crank). You wont get it first time but after a few goes you will see what you are trying to achieve. Alternatively you can set the pistons at TDC and rotate cam for specific inlet tappet lift of 0.19" I think. Where are you located? There may be someone nearby. Attached is a pic when I last did mine for a PW3 cam. Sorry don't have DTI shown but I use a magnetic attachment on the barrel and an extended rod onto the tappet cup.

I have read that vernier cam drives are not as reliable as a standard drive. If the cam timings check out ok why chance it?.

Paul,

I wouldn't bother with a vernier sprocket as it will probably be eccentric and you will never get the cam chain adjustment even. Far better to check the timing with standard sprocket and if it is out by a few degrees file an offset woodruf key from an oversize thickness one.
