When you put it back toget…
When you put it back together, Stuart, make sure you have it the correct way round. The guy who did mine before I bought it had it on back to front with the cable running off towards the rear of the bike from the cylinder head then looping back to the handlebars. The strain in the end ripped the nipple off. The cable should run from the cylinder head to the front of the bike. George

The spring can be wound onto the cable like a spiral. make sure you put plenty of grease on it after.

George - I read your post…
George - I read your post and have had an identical experience. Nipple off, wrong way round and no spring. The pictures were very useful. Will try grease and patience.

fitted a spring to mine i found that the spring ends inside stopping the nipple from being pulled through so i ground them off with my dremel cleaned it out afterwards. fold a steel guitar E string or similar then pass the looped end through the spring wrap it around the inner cable a couple of times. then hold the inner cable with pliers close to the nipple and then push the spring over the nipple turning it as though to uncoil the spring and it should pop over the nipple when the cable is inside the spring then pull the guitar string pulling nipple through the other end . Same snag as I had! I cut the cable in the end and soldered on a new fitting...it was quicker and only cost 40p
