unconnected dynamo

Forums
Forgive my abysmal ignorance of things electrical but will it do the dynamo any harm to run the bike with the F and D cables not connected to anything? With apologies -George

Hi George....It shouldn't cause a problem...

Without any connections the field coil won't receive any energising current from thearmature so is completely out of the circuit. There will be some residual magnetism in the field core which will generate a low voltage in the armature, but once again there is no circuit completed so the armature current flow will also be zero but it will generate an open circuit voltage but it will so low as not to arc over anywhere. What are you doing anyway out of interest?...Les

As I have read some horror story's of sealed Gel battery's bursting I initially did as you are asking but then removed the brushes and re connected the wires. It looks better and as I have no intention of running my bike at night I charge the battery every couple of months to maintain the brake light and horn. John

Thanks guys. Les - I'm sitting inside looking out at a lovely day but I think I've blown my new electronic CVC (the original packed up) so while I'm waiting for confirmation or otherwise I just wondered if any harm would come of riding the bike with the dynamo disconnected. The battery is lead acid and is OK at around 6V but I have LED's anyway. George

LEDs are the old bike owner's friend. No need to change to 12V and the wiring, switches and dynamo have an easy time. And you can see and be seen. Literally brilliant.

Quite agree, Tom. I've yet to put it to the test at night but in the garage it seems to give a good dipped light and a higher main beam. Still awaiting comment from Al Oz (whom I suspect is oo holiday) on my possibly blown CVC. George

LEDs headlightare great for daylight riding but not a good beam for seeing the road at night in my experience. I reverted to good old BPF headlight bulbs for night riding. Superb for stop/tails though.
