Suspension mods

Fellow 961ers

A recent thread discussed steering and the tyre pressures and suspension set-up for our 961s. This has brought up something that I've been wanting to tweak on my bike since first riding it back in March.

Many of the roads I ride on, as I suspect it is for many of you, are somewhat less than perfectly smooth and the ride on my bike has always been on the firm side of comfy.

Thus far I've only altered the front - I've lessened the preload so that 4 rings are showing (3 rings showing is standard) and I've taken 3 clicks of compression damping off (So it's now 17 clicks out from max damping as opposed to the 14 clicks out as standard).

Having done some 100 miles of Hampshire's finest roads tonight (And seeing a fellow 961 as well as an original Commando on my travels) I can confirm that the changes have helped. The steering feels perfectly fine to me and is quick enough for my needs.

Incidentally I ran the tyres at 35psi in the front and 41 psi in the rear, pressures which I've found work well.

The bike feels more compliant without being too soft and I'm still leaving some 20mm plus of travel unused so the preload isn't an issue.

I'd be interested to see what changes others have made and what their feedback is. yes

Thanks for the above info Lee - will now know which way to tweak things. Having never had a modern bike with all these variables available, I have just left it on factory settings & go out and have fun as it is - I have upped the tyre pressures & I think that helps. There is a section in the factory manual about these settings but I haven't studied them yet.

It's definitely worth studying the settings piece in the factory manual. I've been out for another 50 miles tonight and the front certainly feels better over the bumps.

I'd stick to only making one change at a time - Having quality suspension components like ours mean that tweaks will make a difference, unlike some cheaper items. wink
