How do I remove the steering lock in the top yoke please?

Which Commando, 850 MK3 differs from rest and the very early ones with Atlas yokes could be different again.

I had a look at the Andover Norton site, the 71 lock is the same as the 72, so no pins, so just knock it out upwards from the bottom. Same method works on my 72 and 74, both with same lock as 71.

How tight would you expect the lock assembly to be in the yoke? I have a 65 Atlas (in bits) and the new lock pretty much just drops in with hardly any appreciable interference.  In a sense that is okay, given that gravity will hold it in place, but it does not seem right?

No, its needs to be tight or it can just be pushed up by a tea leaf. A light tap with a hammer is normal unless its pinned in position.

Don't forget that there is a grub screw to lock the tumbler into the top yoke. In many cases the screw hole is damaged where p.o.'s have tried to remove the lock. A little dab of Loctite will hold the assembly in place.

There is no grub screw on post Atlas yoked Commando steering locks, MK3 had a pin which is hardened and very difficult to press or drill out.

Deviating a little from the original question, sorry, but on my Mk3 I was able to thread the yoke roll pin hole and fit an allen grubscrew, which proved much easier to do than trying to get a new roll pin to engage in the hole. Will obviously make any future lock removal much easier too.
