Stalling Sport

When I first got my 2013 Sport, it would stall from time to time, even when it was warm. It would also stall a few times when starting from cold. At the first service, I had the louder pipes installed and that included a remap. After remap, the bike ran smoother and didn't stall at all, except when first starting when cold. Now at about 1200 miles, the bike is stalling a lot when it is warm. Sometimes it idles quite smoothly at about 1200-1300 rpm and other times it will stall at stop signs and red lights. Aside from the fact that this problem makes me look like a real tyro, it is a major pain when driving in urban areas.Does anyone have this problem with their 961. Can anything be dome about it? Can the idle be turned up without a remap?I would estimate that it stalls about 1 in 5 times when travelling in stop and go conditions!

It sounds like the idle speed is low due to cables etc settling, it is very easy to adjust the idle speed to rectify this. You do not need a remap, the idle speed should be1200 rpm+/- 100 and is adjusted with the M4 grub screw on the mechanism. As attached.

Even with the tickover adjusted to 1200rpm I find my bikemay still stall occasionally from cold but will be ok once warmed up for a couple of minutes.

If you get any problems like this you can contact Sean at Norton through this site, I have found him to be very helpful.

Good luck, John Mc

Thanks John!

I will try what you recommend.

I had this problem with my 961 sport also and called inat Donington recently to have it checked. Sean and the service team carried out a tweak on the fuel injection which has worked a treat. i also suggest you contact Sean to discuss

Hello

If the cable settling for the idle does not help, there are other possible reasons for this kind of problem. I had a similar problem with my bike and something had to be fixed with the idle engine, but I do not know the details about what. Another reason could be that one of the rubber caps on the side of the fuel injector bodies is missing. Those are a bit difficult to reach because they aresituated under the fuel tank on the inner side on the back of the top of the cylinders.Seeattached pictures. I had one of the caps fallen off once and then too much air was taken in during idle mode.

Mine has displayed similar symptoms. The missing spigot cap/s sound like the sort of thing that would cause this sort of thing. I'll go and have a check of mine. laugh

Hi Donald

I had similar problems with mine which has done many more miles, sometimes it would idle, sometimes stall at junctions etc, it seems the idle device on the injectors is imperfect! A fix from the factory is to take off the silicon tube located behind the cylinders and between the injectors and place a ball bearing about 3/8" inch dia' (sorry old school) onto the hole then replace the tube over it, it's a two minute job and very easy with a pair of long nose pliers, no need to remove tank or anything. Then get the engine up to working temp' and adjust the tickover to 1200rpm and seal the adjuster with a blob of silicon. Bingo! reliable tickover everytime, although none when cold. Hope this helps.

Thanks Nigel,

I will give it a try.

Hi Donald,

After reading this thread, can you believe it, my 961 SF started with an erratic tick over, stalling, sometimes holding the revs at 2000rpm and generally functioning like a bag of shite! This was concerning as I've planed to go to Cadwell Park on it next weekend! I phoned Norton for advice on Friday afternoon and they said that Sean was away but back briefly on Monday before going off to the Isle of Man for the classic. That might be why you have received no reply yet to your email.

However, the nice lady on the phone at Norton told me to phone on Saturday morning and speak to a nice chap known as Touche! (Not his real name) This I did and this guy was really helpful, he seemed to know what the problem was and said he could fix it easily if I could get the bike to him. So I'm taking the bike over Tuesday where he will hopefully sort it out together with a few other niggling issues. Now that's what I call service, a chap who listened to what you had to say, understood the problem and offered a solution there and then. Top marks to the factory on this one cool

Norton Canada had gotten in touch with me and I am going to set up a meeting to have one of their technicians look at the bike next week.

Donald

Have you had any joy on this? I'm experiencing similar snags with the idle on my bike and so I'm curious to hear how you're getting on. blush

Norton Canada just got some new maps for the Sport with the open pipes. I dropped my bike off yesterday to get the appropriate new map installed. I haven't got it back yet.

Norton has advised mt that the bike has been remapped and is running perfectly. Unfortunately it snowed here the other day . . . Oh well I am ready for April 2015.
