Special or Model 7?

Forums

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to ask for for help, maybe someone who has done something similar can offer advice, maybe even point me in the right direction?

In the past I have rebuilt three Nortons, a WD 16h, a 1955 ES2 and a 1961 Navigator, and all have been to original specification, with a few minor deviations, such as ignition and other sundry items, none of which would prevent me from obtaining an age related registration number from DVLA.

Ihave now decided to add a Large Twin to the stable, and have recently acquired a very nice Model 7 plunger frame, of 1952 vintage, and the core of an engine of the same year, albeit with non matching numbers, and a period laydown gearbox.

I am quite interested in building up a "special" using the frame and engine as the core. I don't want to use anything other than Norton parts, but not all parts from 1952. For example forks, wheels and tinware may come from a mixture of years and some of theengineeringwork will be bespoke to the machine. I am not looking to make an O.C.C. style theme bike, It is my plan that the end result will not be to 1952 spec, but very sympathetic to that era with a touch of Cafe Racer style polishedaluminiumto it.

Does anyone know how I will subsequently stand getting such a thing registered as a 1952 machine? My fear is that I may have a job convincing our friendly, local, DVLA office not to stick a Q plate on it!

Any advice or words of wisdom gratefully received.

Paul
