Single phase alternator or 3 phase?

Forums

Hello all

I am just about to update my Dommi to 12v with a Pazon Surefire ignition kit but am not sure whether to go for a high output single phase or 3 phase alternator.

Sparks are not my strong point so sound advice on the pros and cons of each would be much appreciated.

My thanks as always,

Jason.

Most Jap bikes use three phase. This means you can use generic regulator rectifier units rather than the poor zener diode system. What is the difference in price between the single and three phase alternator?

I use a single phase with a control box from AO Services which replaces the rectifier and zener diode. Provides plenty of wiggly amps and keeps it all exceedingly simple which suits me down to the ground.

The three phase alternator on my Commando generated more Watts at lower revs than the single phase item I previously had. This stopped the battery draining during night rides when all lights were being used at low speeds. I believe that the three phase set-up tends to be kinder to the charging system. Al Oz will probably be able to explain why.

I put 3 phase on my Commando. It can now run with lights on and a heated waistcoat at low revs. Slso the wiring is now a tidier job.

Go to the cheaper one. Think that's the single phase. Also the appropriate Regulatoers are cheaper.

I don't know where you get that idea from Mr Past Normal Hope? You only need three phase if you want heated anything, or want to creep about with your headlights on all then time, other wise the standard set up is adequate. The reg/rect from me cost the same but the stators costs a bit more but then there are other companies W.... that sell cheap(er) stators.

Other wise all nformation on here is relevant.
