short roadholder

Forums

Apolgies fir using this section but I cannot remember hiw to place an wanted ad!

Whilst riding my m50 I heard a loud bang from the forks and they then topped.

At home I found a leak from the right side. Removal of the fork revealed a horror.

The damper road has punched through at the base. The spindle was doing a good job of retaining the oil.

Has anyone got a right hand fork bottom to sell please? I think mine would be difficult to weld up plus I cannot machine the inner base flat.

Thank you.

John,

The good news is that R/H sliders are easier to find than L/H with the pinch bolt.

If no luck all is not lost, expensive but you could buy a pair of new early Commando sliders with a stronger pinch bolt area. The bad news is that the pair will set you back a shade over £200.

Sorry about the typos earlier. My galaxy pad has a very poor keyboard which lacks response.

As for the fork leg I had googled the new legs via norvil but a new one would not show the old fork bottom in good light!

I may have fixed the fork this afternoon. At present it is full of oil testing for leaks overnight.

I turned a spigot smaller than the botton bolt. I inserted it into the fork then used lumiweld to buildup the area..The flat face on the turned bar fits in the indent which houses the bottm of tbe damper rod. The lumiwed did not bond to the steel and once the spigot was removed a small hole almost perfectly symmetical was left. I then drilled this to size and reassembled.

I could have used the damper as a spigot but was unsure if the lumiweld would damage it.

We will see if it works!

Fair point, Robert, I built up a set of Short Roadholders using these new sliders for a Dommie racer in the making BUT used 7 3/8 yokes. You may be right?

Let's hope John has fixed it or the cost may extend to a pair of yokes too.

Thanks Neil.so far so good. I checked them an hour ago and no leaks.

next step is to refit them and see if the repair stands up to use.

I know nothing about commando forks but thanks for the info.

No worries John, basically the same forks with the shorter stantions and a bit more meat on the sliders than the pre Commando version.

Update..my repair held. I therefore reassembled everything and prepared to test the bike

Until I looked at the forks and found oil flowing copiously from the seal holder area!!!

The damn seal must have failed to to repeated disassembly/assembly.

More hassles ahead, but isn't it good to achieve something?
