What is a "Drive cover"? Do you mean the outer primary chain case?

You could run without it, provided you lubricated your primary chain with chain lube, the sort intended for the rear chain. You will wear out your primary chain quicker too, since you will be picking up grit, sand, etc.

It would be safer to just spray the cover with rattle-can paint, then take it off and have it chromed next winter, when it will be too cold and icy to ride the bike.

Bad for your clutch bearings, chain and toes, most likely illegal as hazardous to anyone who may come into contact, kids, animals etc.

Hey got my laptop working properly again.....ok thanks Colin..yes it was the primary cover....wish I lived in a country where I could pick up a lot of sand ...and thanks Robert...it is most definitely illegal and will be careful of the toes....as for being bad for the clutch bearings, is it the fact that it will run hotter or am I missing a trick...thanks to both..Russ

I think the problem Robert is writing about is that the clutch bearings (1/4" x 1/4" rollers) get what little lubrication they get from splashing oil in the primary case. You should be OK as long as you're not one of those riders who does not put the bike in neutral at traffic lights and similar situations and just holds the clutch in and revs it to stop it stalling...
