Rubber battery box for bike with exposed battery

Forums

My 1955 Dominator Model 88 will soon go live (I hope!) and will need a battery cover. I used to have a hollowed-out Lucas King of the Road battery with Yuasa moped battery inside. That got lost, so I need a replacement

RGM is offering a replica rubber shell (Part No WW14077) for £23, and the same rubber shell with dry cell battery for £30 (Part No WW14080)

Does anyone have any knowledge / experience with these?

I see in the on-line spec that the two cells are 2.6V, 4.5AH. If you add them up, it makes only 5/2V - not sure if this works/ Comments?

I bought a replica battery case with 2 dry cell batteries from Burlen a few years ago. They have been trouble-free ever since. My batteries are wired in series for a 12v BSA (a BSA!!!).

Hi Paul,

You have missread it, it is 2 x 6V 4.5AH

So in series you have 12V or in parallel you have 6V

I so love they way web-sites use grey scale and small letters.....

You are right, it says 2 6V 4.5AH....

Any idea what sort of dry cell is used?

I hear that for proper charging, the much-vaunted gel batteries need higher charge voltage than old Brit systems can charge at: 7V for '6V systems, and 13V for 12V systems.

Some extra info - the RGM battery is 'Exide' branded, and Draganfly offer something similar with options of 'Exide', 'Lucas' and 'Lucas King of the Road' branding. Price is £68. Burlen have something similar, for around £50

I note that the RGM offering is Wassell - any comments on expected quality / performance? The price does seem good value, expecially as the battery is only an extra £7 on top of the rubber case.

I believe the Burlen ones are gel mat construction. I'm rather fond of the old-fashioned lead/acid batteries but gel batteries are popular and they do have the advantage of not spilling acid on your pride and joy if it falls over.

Decide do a six volt battery, the same size as those originally fitted. The drawback being that it has a translucent case ( definitely not like the original!). I fitted one to my '54 88, last year, having first masked over the level marks, then spraying it Matt black. O.K., it does not look quite original, but, only river counters notice.
