Rogue magdyno washer

I'll try and attach a pic of a washer from somewhere in the MO1L magdyno I'm attempting to rebuild. It seems to be an oil soaked hard felt material measuring 55mm OD (sorry - metric is easier!) with central 26mm (probably 1" actually) hole and a 7mm hole in the periphery. It appears to be a firm oil soaked felt material. I cannot figure out where it goes. It does not show up on any exploded diagram I've seen. It may be an oil seal from behind the fibre drive cog and fitted inside the casing - or has it fallen into the wrong box. Any clues? GeorgeAttachments magdyno-washer-edited-jpg

Did it go between the outer cover and the timing case on the engine to stop dust and dirt getting in? There's quite a big gap there so I cut a bit of felt to go in there on mine. No idea if it was original though.

Think Andy's got it George; mine came with a piece of carpet in the same spot. Wash it out and fluff it up or get some old style carpet felt (woolen underlay). Not too snug on the shaft though George don'tget it dragging around.

Hi George

Your picture shows an imprint of a keyhole shape on the cork that would match the rear face of the timing cover so I agree with Andy.

However this has been pressed into (more useful?) service from what I suspect to be a BSA A7/10 crankcase breather valve cork washer. But if it isn't broken, don't fix it!

Well spotted Colin. I'd hoped someone would see that as it was too difficult to explain although you managed alright! Just back from a shopping trip with SWMBO so about to check it all out in the garage. Will report back. Cheers - George

Right - managed to snook into the garage and found that the errant washer fits between the rear of the timing chain housing and the front of the magdyno gear housing, so not a standard part. Thanks for your input guys - it put me on the right track. The washer had fallen into the wrong container and the hole in the periphery matched the peg on the keying gear centre behind the magneto drive gear hence my confusion. Well done fellas - sorted! George

It may be worth checking that you have the correct magneto mounting bracket. As the timing gears became wider over the years, the bracket gained more 'overhang'. If an earlier bracket were used then there would be a larger than normal gap between magdyno and rear of timing chest.
