Rocker feed oil leak

Forums

Has anyone any suggestions why I cannot cure an oil leak from the lower banjo on the rocker feed on a 650SS, I have renewed the cover, renewed the pipe assembly, used the correct sealing washers and still it weeps!

I have also replaced the oil pressure switch, the bike runs on Castrol 20/50 and is reasonably oil tight everywhere else, the face of the timing cover to banjo is perfect, is there an underlying cause I am missing?

Perhaps you have a porous timing cover or a pin hole in the pipework. Try cleaning and then dusting the suspect area with talcum powder before running the engine. This may help to pinpoint the naughty chunk.

Hi Phil

Have already done that, have changed the timing cover, replaced the stainless Goodridge lines with new original type, tried aluminium washers, fibre washers, the correct copper ones etc, etc, I am wondering if there is excessive pressure, so have changed the pressure relief valve as well! I ahve run out of ideas!

Nigel-i sympathize,i had the same experience on my '67 Atlas.I tried annealing the copper washers, aluminium washers, fibre washers-still it weeped! I annealed the washers again, cleaned it all thoroughly and added a smear of instant gasket to each side of both washers-that seems to have done the trick-fingers crossed !

Hello Its the information you have not put down on hear that bothers me,

Now what year of 650ss is this machine from, and Have you or someone else changed the oil pump or and oil pump worm drive to a Six start pump has these run at a higher peressure to the early 3 start oil pumps , even the early Atlas Had the 3 start oil pump , they were changed by Sept 1965 to 6 start oil pumps for the 1966 season , other than this there can only be a blockage somewhere in the oil system. and check the return oilways at the back of the cylinder head inlet side right hand side, and the back of the barrels and L shape oilway in the righ hand crankcase to match the oilway from the barrel base, this does get blocked, now i do hope all this may help you, yours anna j dixon
