Roadholder fork springs

I have just stripped the forks on my Navigator. These are normal Roadholders. The springs both have a marking at the ends with green paint. One article I read says that green means sidecar springs (which seems unlikely in a lightweight) but I can find no reference to colour dabs in any other literature.

Can anyone confirm if these are indeed sidecar springs - or can I replace them and use happily?

I can't say anything useful about your springs, but while a past as a sidecar hauler is unlikely it's far from unthinkable -- remember Watsonian's Bambini sidecar for scooters (a very rough one for restoration is currently fetching £200 on eBay).

If the sidecar rating of your springs is confirmed you'll want to think about checking your frame, of course.

Hello there,

To the best of my knowledge the green paint confirms that your springs are correct for a Navigator. They are very fractionally shorter than the Dominator ones but I can't find my notes to confirm the actual length.

There are no replacement springs available for the Navigator that I am aware off; Dominator springs will fit.

Thanks. The frame is a strange bolted up style on these bikes but as far as I could see it was straight and true - I never thought of a chair on it?

Thanks. I assumed that iof I needed new ones I would just use Dommi ones. Your suggestion that green was for the Navi has cheered me up a bit. I think I will ask Andy!!

Interesting thing, the forksprings have green paint on the top. According to the old Mick Hemmings and Brian Crighton article onroadholderforks, solo bikes had red paintedsprings, sidecars had green,. Also, mysprings are spot on 18" long, according to mick hemmings they should be 18.687. Any thoughts?

Response from Peter Holland

The lightersprings inroadholderforks intended for Navigator and Electra arecolourcoded green. Yours are exactly correct and I'm sure they will be of correct length for your Electra. Everything, other than thespring, is common with norton dominator.

Thanks to all. I had seen the reference to red and green which is why I asked the question. Andy, out technical expert, has confirmed that the Navigator springs were indeed marked with green pain - so it looks like I am OK.
