Removing the left-hand 'z' plate

Forums

Hello Chaps, I want to replace the 'O' rings on the swinging arm pivot end covers on my Mk2A (one with a grease nipple for sae140 oil). Unless I'm missing something it would appear that it's necessary to remove the left hand 'Z' plate to get to the cover on that side. I removed the footrest, top front Z plate nut and bottom rear nut and bolt but how can I remove the centre top bolt. The head turns but the nut on the other end turns with it and thus won't undo. I'm damned if I can get any form of spanner to the rear nut to lock it. It would appear that I'll need to remove the entire primary drive inner cover to get to it - am I right? Why couldn't the factory have welded the nut to the frame in the first place thus locking it by default!!?

I doubt you'll get to it from behind the Z plate as the end of the swinging arm is behind the primary drive inner casing. It's a big job to get the primary drive off. If you want to try from behind Z plate you 'just' need to find a long thin spanner you can get on the nut. Why not take the swinging arm out? That would be the least amount of parts to remove.

Draw the swinging arn spindle out from the right hand side after you've undone the 1/4" bolt in the middle of it. Replace what you need to and glue the LH end cap in the swinging arm with silicon sealant or similar before re- assembly.

The front wheel spindle can be used to draw the swinging arm pivot out but you'l probably need a sliding hammer with an appropriate threaded adaptor.
