Removal of damper tube and magneto

Forums

I am having trouble removing the damper tube in the front fork of my 650 SS. The holding bolt , accessed through the bottom of the fork leg, will not release, it keeps turning the damper tube. Is there any tool which can be used to hold the damper tube in place, I have tried lodging it with a wooden splint and "shocking" the bolt off with an air socket to no avail ?

Also any suggestions how to remove the magneto - the central "self extracting" bolt ( which I expect to slacken off then become stiffer as it extracts) loosens without coming from the advance/retard unit. I do not want to risk trying to lever the a/r unit off in case I damage the timing case or the unit itself and I do not fancy putting a puller on to the a/r unit for fear of bending the back disc. The magneto holding bolts are no problem and the magneto could be removed if I can get the advance and retard unit off.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hello Mick How Odd The ADT should undo easily They do have a double thread so it starts to come undone then get stiffer but keep going it will come undone it then comes off very easy , As for you fork troubles you need to push up the leg from the bottom so you can get some Mole grips on at the top this should hold the top end to undo the nut at the bottom if this done to work try fit a exter nut on the top as a locking nut . Even A woman Like Me can do jobs like these , Ps Timing for 650 is 32 degrees Before top dead center Fully Advanced The Magnetos Are the best !if you what electronic you can get a BTH self generating electronic magneto Fit and forget it! Thanks Anna.

I will need to find some mole grips with at least a one and threequarter inch reach as this is the depth in the fork leg. The tube will not come up any further. Regarding the double threaded nut on the ADT - it did loosen but despite turning it continuously for several minutes and pulling it at the same time it is not having any effect. I suspect the thread is damaged but I may be wrong. I know nothing of its previous owners or of any possible maltreatment. If this is the case any body suggest how it can be removed without damaging anything.

Mick,

If the self extracting bit of the ADT is not working then the only way of getting it off would be to spring it off the taper of the magneto shaft.

Try this; tighten the centre bolt and then back it off a few turns, set up a small set of pullers, put some weight on then give the puller a sharp tap with a hammer, if it does not move more weight on the puller and more sharp taps.

I cant guarantee that you will not damage the ADT but it will have to come regardless by the sound of it.

There is no key and it is only small so it should come off without problem, to have the ADT sorted out try Dave Lindsley, he did mine and made an excellent job.

Good Luck

As you say it will have to come off. The centre bolt is now quite loose but no matter how many times I turn it there is no effect. I will try your method.

A pity Anna demeans herself by saying even a woman can do these things because I think women do lots of things - My wife cooks, irons, makes beds, washes pots, makes the meals, cleans the house from top to bottom and shouts me in from the shed when the brew is made. Just jesting, whoops here she comes with my Horlicks must not let her see this.

All the best and thanks for your input.

I have fashioned a puller and have now got the ADT off. It was certainly tight and came of with a loud bang. No damage to the unit has been done although the self extracting bolt threads are stripped, they are O.K. at the magneto end but not where the bolt self extracts.

Thanks again

Cheers Mick
