Hello everyone, I am posting this message to find out how my father would go about sourcing a registration plate for his 1953 Norton Model 7, this has matching engine and frame numbers, but no log book or old tax discs. He has contacted the Norton owners club, posted all his details and photos off and received details of where the bike was delivered to and other details regarding it sent back which he is very grateful for.

Now the next step would trying to get it registered. Can you possibly tell me if it is possible to search for thr original registration number plate the motorcycle would have had in 1953 from a local County Council office? The bike was a basket case and had an old number plate with it which has a prefix THA then three numbers. Would any of you be able to identify the origins of a THA plate and the year? He has always wondered if it is the plate from his Model 7. If this was a 1953 plate, is there anyway to resurrect this or find out if it is from the Noton?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The number plate might well be from the Model 7. 'THA' is a series issued between February and September 1953 in Warley (Birmingham).

If the factory records show that the original dealer was in this area then there is a good chance that they belong together.

Unfortunately, the Kithead Trust website indicates that all Warley records have been destroyed and without any paperwork, DVLA are unlikely to reissue the number.

If the club can provide the purchaser's name and address, you might be able to turn something up by knocking on doors but after all this time, the chances are small.

Hello Richard and thanks for getting back to me. Believe it or not the original dealer was in Birmingham and thefirst halfof 1953 ties in well to the date of the Model 7 from the NOC records my father receievd back. The hinged tail section of the rear mudguard was always missing from my fathers bike as it was a basket case Norton in many pieces, but the number plate remained. It does therefore look like this THA numberplate is the one that was origainlly on the bikea s all seems to tie into it.

This motorcycle then was sold to a buuer in Blackpool and must have crossed the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland at some stage (where it is now) and we are wondering now would some of the County Council offices here maybe have a record of it for road taxation purposes. Is it possible to use old County Council records to resurrect a number THA ***, if this actually is the correct one? I suppose it would be a matter of contacting the different County Councils to see what records they still hold. We havent given up just yet smiley

Some of you may also have gone down this road with your own motorcycles so any help or pointers onwhat to do would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps Winston my first Norton was a model 7 of 1953 vintage with theS/A frame and siamesed; also with the diamond shaped toolbox and oil tank. I have looked for detaila on the DVLA and nothing is recorded for the plate (VHK 548).

Bought it in bits in 1965 in Edinburgh with this number on it together with the corresponding log book and sold on in late 66. It may have been scrapped. Here is a genuine mod 7 plate of 1953 and wonder if it is available to you should you wish to re-use via the DVLA?
