Registration numbers

Forums

Could you sell your 1950s etc number plate, and if you did what would the Dvla give you in its place. it’s not that I plan to do it.

Yes I did read that somewhere, maybe in the log book. Maybe different if you had the bike with an original number. I think my bike was registered in 1984 so probably not the original number. I wonder if with a frame and engine number you could search for the first registration number.

Only possible if you know the local council area it was first registered in and they have kept the pre DVLA records.

My 57 Bullet has its original number which was reclaimed from the DVLA on the bike's return form Northern Ireland where it may have had a NI plate. Originally registered in Lancashire but records lost. The original 1957 green log book was apparently sent to the DVLA by the chap I bought it off but they would not return it although I have the continuation book. The new V5 is stamped non transferable so quite clear that MFR stays with bike. Would never sell even if could and my wife like its as it can be made into 'Mad for Ruth'. My 57 Dommie 99 (frame 57 engine 59) is the original registration and the V5 is not stamped in such a manner so presume could sell but would not although WVS has some connotations which may make it of some value. Trust you are all keeping safe. Regards, Hugh.

So long as the number is transferable (it will say on the V5 if it isn’t) you can sell it. DVLA will give you another age related number for the donor vehicle which I think is not transferable. These were unused Scottish numbers, but I’m not sure what they are using now.
