Afternoon. In an attempt to check the correct amount of oil was in the box, i drained it out. 1947 M18. Then, following the instruction in an old manual, poured it back in through the cover plate above the kick start. None of this made its way back into the box, sitting instead pretty much where i had poured it. I assume therefore that the nut on the back of the box is the actual filler?Just thought i should check with you all before i cock it up again. Not sure how i am going to get that first lot of oil back out?
Hi Philip, The drain plug…

Hi Philip,
The drain plug is on the bottom rear of the gearbox down near the bottom fixing bolt, the filler is the big hexagon head plug just to the rear of the kick-start boss and this is the level you fill the oil to. The oval (elliptical) cover is access to the clutch cable adjustment and the large cover it fits to and you have filled with oil is only a dust cover to modernise the older gearbox. You can just loosen the screws and let it run out or use a syringe whichwill be less messy. Best oil is SAE 50, hypoid gearbox oil is not recommended.
Regards, Richard.
Just to add a note of caution, don't over-tighten the big filler plug as the case is easily splitbecause the seating is tapered and the thread is too coarse.
